Nobody closes a tab thinking "that required too much cognitive effort." They just close it. Cognitive load is the most common reason an ad underperforms and the least likely one to get named in a post-mortem — it doesn't look like a failure, it looks like someone simply losing interest, which is exactly what makes it dangerous: it hides in plain sight.

A banner or social ad with more than one idea competing for the same three seconds isn't communicating more — it's asking the viewer to do the editing work the creative team should have done first.

Two CTAs fighting for the same click don't double the chance of a conversion. They split attention and usually lower it, because the brain has to resolve which one matters before it can act on either.

High cognitive load and low attention often get confused for the same problem. They're not. An ad can hold attention just fine and still fail — because holding attention and being easy to process are two different things, measured separately.
Why It's Easy to Miss and Expensive to Ignore
A/B testing catches load indirectly, if at all — a lower conversion rate tells you something didn't work, not why. Cognitive load prediction identifies the specific element creating friction before the ad is live, which turns "this underperformed, and we're not sure why" into "this specific element is the problem, and here's the fix."
